I have had inquiries about how to follow along for next weeks event. My bib number will be 674. You can log on to www.ironman.com and track progress throughout the day by looking that number up in the "athlete tracker" or by my last name.
Many of you know I have signed up to compete in the St. George Ironman being held in a little over one week. My part time job of training for this crucible has been waining for the last few weeks. Tonight was a moment of reflection for me as I began one of my last jogs in preparation. I have been told I am crazy, nuts, out of my mind, "brave" (usually said with a flavor of sarcasm) and more. I have put inordinate pressure on Brooke and the girls financially and emotionally shooting for this star. There have been countless mornings accompanied by a 5 am alarm reminding me it was time to jump on the bike or run for the next two hours and then go to work. Saturdays have been filled with "long rides" lasting three to seven hours at a time in anywhere from 29 to 45 degrees. Afternoons have been filled with the sound of my feet pounding the asphalt to the tune of my breath.
I have learned through this to be careful about who I share my dreams with because some people don't like to hear it while others will discretely hint that this is something "others" do (whoever that is). I have also learned that with my mind set on the target it can be penetrated. There have been setbacks to be sure but with every setback, I have found a way around. I am indebted to a wife and girls that have tolerated it all and never gave way. They have stood by me. They deserve the world. I especially want to single out my sweet wife who has supported me through it all. It is not easy to battle three wild little girls all day only to hear her husband come home and say he has some training to do. I love you Brooke.
Finish or not, this will be worth it. I can't wait!
-Ben
